As one housing plan falls apart in the Anaheim Resort, another one is gearing up to seek approval.

West Millennium Homes is pushing forward with its proposal to build 191 condos, including live-work units, in the back of a site where a closed Toys R Us sits. The developer also is asking for the city to remove 3.3 acres from the protected Anaheim Resort district - a 2.2-square mile area set aside for tourist uses only around Disney theme parks.

But unlike SunCal’s initial plans for 1,500 homes nearby, the West Millennium development will incorporate tourist uses: A 105-room hotel, restaurant and shopping space will face the Harbor Boulevard corridor.

“We’d preserve the resort-type uses,” said Derek Baak of West Millennium. “To me, it makes sense for the back part to be a residential area. It’s surrounded by residential.”

The plan is tentatively set for the Planning Commission meeting on Jan. 7.

So far, Disney and its supporters have opposed any attempt at homes in the area, saying they will detract from the tourism mission. An initiative is set for the June 3 ballot that would require any housing proposal to go before voters.
