Will Disney pay for monorail beyond its parks?

Mayor Curt Pringle State of the City 2008

Anaheim Mayor Curt Pringle today announced a novel way to fund a monorail that stretches beyond Disney’s borders: Ask private businesses to pay for it.

The monorail would stretch from the Disney area to a planned transportation hub by Angel Stadium. Pringle specifically named Disney as one business that could help foot the bill for the $250 million system.

Here’s the official statement from the Disneyland Resort about the idea:

“We are very interested in this transportation vision. We have been working with the City on their master transportation plan and we plan to stay involved on this exciting project. We look forward to learning more, but at this point, it is premature to talk about project specifics.”

Check out a story about the plan here.

No way. Disney has no reason to do this as their visitors arrive by car and bus, not the train. And why would they open themselves up to any liability that the idea presents — they’ve got deep pockets and will be a perfect target for the first slip and fall that occurs.

I wish. Anaheim needs transportation like this. A monorail would put Anaheim on the map. If we are lucky, maybe they will later expand onto Harbor. That way you can live in the Platinum Triangle and use the transport to go to Downtown Fullerton for a good night. It might also help reduce drunk drivers (one would hope atleast).
