Three big changes planned for the Disneyland Resort

August 8th, 2008, 4:18 pm · 9 Comments · posted by Sonya Smith

The Sun Wheel in Disney’s California Adventure is expected to get a facelift, Tinkerbell will push out the Little Mermaid and the Orange Stinger will turn silly.

Plans for renovations and additions at Disney’s California Adventure will include re-theming the Sun Wheel as Mickey’s Fun Wheel and the Orange Stinger as a Silly Symphonies-based ride. Also, the Little Mermaid meet and greet area in Disneyland’s Tomorrowland is planned to become a fairy meet and greet.

sunwheelMICKEY’S FUN WHEEL: A Disney Imagineering official confirmed tonight that the Sun Wheel will join the attractions being changed in the Paradise Pier area of Disney’s California Adventure. The main change expected will be removing the current sun face in the middle of the wheel and replacing it with a Mickey Mouse face. The Mickey Mouse face is planned to be a classic wide-eyed Mickey Mouse.

orangestingerSILLY SYMPHONIES: The Orange Stinger will join in planned changes for the pier-area — expected to change from the current Orange Stinger theme to a Silly Symphonies theme. Currently, the attraction is a swing ride inside a giant orange sitting lakeside and plans show that the building’s foundation will remain the same, while the orange and even round building are planned to change. The attraction will be based on the classic “Silly Symphonies” animations done by Walt Disney’s animation studio in the 1930s. The band leader, Mickey Mouse, is expected to be part of the ride.

The current Little Mermaid meet and greet next to the Tomorrowland entrance is planned to be replaced by a fairy and Tinkerbell meet and greet. The area, as currently planned, will make guests feel like they’ve shrunk down to fairy-size and the path will be filled with pixie dust.

No date is given for these three planned attractions. Renovations at Disney’s California Adventure (which includes adding a Cars Land and a Little Mermaid attraction) is expected to cost $1.2 billion and be finished by 2012. As far as the fairy and Tinkerbell area, the only relevant date is that Tinkerbell will star in her own DVD-movie set for an Oct. 28 release.

    Mickey Mouse is the antichrist.

Main Street USA is no more. It has been paved over by profits that have been earned by companies like WalMart that exploit their workers and exploit child labor laws.

STOP SHOPPING the big box stores.

    CHANGE alujah!

A diciple of Reverend Billy of the Church of Stop Shopping.

No doubt. Want to draw more visitors? LOWER YOUR FRIGGIN PRICES!

  • reader says:

one-point-two BILLION? with a “B”? how long would it take to make that up?

  • Carly says:

Who cares? The changes are so lame that no one who didn’t read this article will notice them, or if they do, not for more than a minute tops. What a waste! How about some corporate social responsibility? Listen to the people and lower your prices!

  • My_Brain_Hurts says:

Carly if they wanted to show some corporate responsibility they would quite buying the trinkets they sell on “Main Steet USA’ from countries that exploit their laborers, some earning as little as 17 cents an hour and working 12-14 hours a day 6 days a week all so little snot nose Johnny crotch trophy can have his plastic fantastic craptastic toys that will end up under his bed (also probably made with cheap exploited labor) or in his closet.

Here’s an idea….use the $$$ budgeted for this project and assist the community in building afordable housing for the underpaid employees that work for Disney and in many instances are homeless!

  • Kevin says:

    1. The budget for these projects came from the earnings the Disney Co. received during the 16 month long 50th celebration.
    2. Michael Eisner cut the original budget for DCA years before it was built, which is why the park is now being brought up to what it should have been in the first place. This is also why Eisner is no longer at the helm.
    3. The high cost of the day passes is to off-set the cost of the legal department and having to deal with the frivilous lawsuits from stupid guest behavior and to also pay the high cost of California insurance companies.
    4. If you don’t like the cost to get in, go to Knott’s.

  • jake says:

ok, people GET OVER IT. Disney is a company that basically does what they want to do. if you don’t like it, tough. Eisner cut the budget, which gave DCA a cheaper look. Why do you think they have a basic wild mouse ride? Six Flags upped the anty on a wild mouse coaster by converting it into a “dark ride” (look up The Dark knight Coaster at Six Flags Great Adventure) The new theme that they are coming up with (Goofy’s Flight School) could easily be converted into a dark ride/coaster. Even add “spinning cars’, and sharp, high banked turns to the ride, and whah lah, a C-D ticket attraction!!!! No. The budget did not come from the 50th celebration, and no, the high cost is not to off set the legal dept. That’s a cope out. Disney is the one company that can charge that much, because it’s DISNEY. EVERYONE knows who/what Disney is. Do you see other countrys making other cartoons from Universal, or Paramount? no. Disney, is globally known. Please, stop making ignorant comments, it will do the world good.
