Disney responds to “Flash” Mountain concerns in the blogoshpere

May 4th, 2009, 9:05 pm · 34 Comments · posted by Adam Townsend, Staff Writer

You may have seen that we posted a link to Al Lutz’s article on Mice Age about how Disney had gotten rid of the photo editor position in the hut near Splash Mountain — the person who monitored the action shots from the plunge to make sure female riders weren’t lifting up their shirts for the cameras.

As Around Disney explained before, the semi-naked, unofficial tradition by a few is an attempt to have their photos show up for sale — and in public view on a TV screen — near the attraction’s exit.

As journalists, we should try to get both sides of the story as much as possible.  But sometimes blogs function as a site showing news reported elsewhere first, and we don’t call up all of the parties involved.

Usually linking to items from Reuters or The Associated Press, the  mainstream media, doesn’t prompt any comment from the folks in Disney’s public relations department, but we sure heard from them on this one.

So here’s the official response from Disney on the so-called Flash Mountain issue, in its entirety:

We continually evaluate and refine our business to ensure that we are operating as efficiently as possible. In evaluating the ride photo moderation role and process, we have determined that actual inappropriate behaviors by guests are rare.

We will change the staffing for this function as of May 3. Cast Members who currently are assigned to image screening positions will be redeployed to other positions that can provide greater levels of Guest service.

Ride photos will continue to be monitored by Cast Members at the point of sale. In addition, the current screening system will remain intact to provide the option for management to initiate image monitoring if necessary.

Offensive and inappropriate behavior is not tolerated at Disney Parks and Resorts.  Any guest who exhibits inappropriate behavior is subject to removal from the park.

Why don’t they just discontinue taking photos? With no incentive, bimbos from around the country/world won’t be tempted to show off their ‘attributes.’ Oh, wait, there’s money to be made off of that. Disney will never go for it….

  • OCNative2 says:

Disneyland is suppose to be a place for kIDS. I agree wide stance stop taking pictures. I swear Disney is going to pot. I actually haven’t been a disneyland fan for many years. Their attitudes ticked me off.

Oh my God, my little conservative eyes are burning, I have never seen female breasts before, the horror of it. So what ! every kid and adult has seen female breasts before, get over it. It adds humor and fun to the ride, conservatives need to have a beer and listen to some Van Halen.

Please, Disneyland is a place place for kids and family to enjoy themsevles in a nice atmosphere. Tell your mom and your girlfriend to leave their nasty saggy boobs in their tops and instead of trying to get some teenage attention.

This has nothing to do with conservatives or liberals. It’s about these bimbos just seeking attention. We have the internet and texting for that.

Think of someone ese besides yourself for a change.

    .

Imagine freaking out because your child actually saw a woman’s boob.

    The HORROR!

  • halosweetie says:

I used to work in the photo section of splash mt. You saw a lot more than woman flashing. You saw guys flashing gang signs, people doing dangerous things and a number of other stupid things. I once saw a guy who hung his kid completly out of the log and hang him over the drop for the picture. If you let one picture get by you that was inappropiate you could get fired, but now all of a sudden they don’t care. Seems like a bad idea. Sounds like Disney just wants to save a couple of bucks by eliminating that job.

  • hunterr83 says:

Only takes a few bad apples to ruin it for everybody. If the profit they make off selling pictures exceeds the cost of a single employee sorting through the pictures to make sure no nudity gets past, keep the employee. If the profit from selling the pictures does not exceed or equal the cost of the employee, get rid of the person, like they’re doing here, or just get rid of pictures altogether. People don’t go to Disneyland to have their children see pornographic images in plain view.

  • GregandJeff says:

So this blog might have heard from Disney, but in effect they didn’t say anything different than what was already reported. Unless they are turning off the monitors inside the attraction itself (which was only recently repaired in the last year) and then also turning off the monitors when you exit, this is a real problem.

The photo booth employees can delete pictures as they see them, but they are selling photos and certainly won’t have time to be looking at each photo as they are taken! And they will be looking at photos that people are buying, not the ones being taken and presented to people inside the ride and at the exit.

And once word gets out, then expect things to get even more naughty then they are to begin with. It’s an incredibly stupid idea. And like I said before, how many photos an hour do they need to sell to recoup the cost of a photo editing position? One? How hard is that? I find Disney amazingly cheap sometimes when it comes to cost that are recovered in the blink of an eye. It makes no sense.

  • bpsqwerty says:

most of these chicks flashing are big fatties anyway. nobody wants to see that…

  • Patriot says:

The article states “Offensive and inappropriate behavior is not tolerated at Disney Parks and Resorts. Any guest who exhibits inappropriate behavior is subject to removal from the park.”

    WHAT?

DLand could care less about “inappropriate behavior” if it attracts MONEY. Just look at this “behavior” and the “gay day” behavior. We as a family do not go DLand anymore. It’s a waste of our hard earned dollars.

  • cathdogs says:

Look guys, this is 2009, not 1953. Pretty sure kids have seen breasts before. The world has changed folks, you are living in a world gone by if female breasts are somehow offensive or disgusting to you. Move to the Amish country if you fear the sight of breasts, or talk to a therapist and figure out why you live in such fear.

  • gofigure says:

Oh, cover my eyes, I think we just saw female anatomy ! I love these people who talk about “Appropriate Behavior”, like there is a manual that we were all handed that tells us all that female breasts are a scary evil thing. What is “Not Appropriate” to you, may not be “Appropriate” to someone else. Imagine that, someone else actually has opinion other than your own, who knew ?

  • makaveli1 says:

damn imma start going to disneyland!!

  • Irving says:

Walt would have had them discontinue the pictures immediately. The current Disney organization needs to re-visit the vision, philosophies, and business acumen of its founder. Disneyland is on its way to becoming ‘just another amusement park’ something Walt knew would be the death knell of his unique concept, be it the the 1950’s or the 21st century.

A money-grubbing philosophy now permeates Disney, and it is increasingly blatant each year.

    • Marko50 says:

Is that what Walt would have done? What were you, his best friend? Judging from some of Walt’s earlier toons, he had no problems with something a bit risque.

And I’ve seen “Flash Mountain” photos. Most don’t even qualify as a bit risque.

  • GregandJeff says:

What’s inappropriate about gay day at Disneyland? Are gay people good enough to wait on you in a restaurant or entertain you in a parade but not enjoy a day off there too?

  • evennow says:

Stupid idea. The screen at the bottom of the ride is big enough to take a photo off of. So some girls bare it all then some guys take the piture off the screen and it gets posted on the internet. Bet the loss to D/L via lawsuits of minor girls getting boobed on the internet outweighs by far the dollar the save by replacing that employee. The brains behind this did not think it through! Surprise, surprise, surprise. “Oh daddy, I didn’t know my picture would be on the internet. It’s Disneyland after all!”

  • Heights Life says:

The problem is that some women bare it all while innocent victims are in the boats with them, and they can’t purchase their memories from their day at Disney. Remember, for every action there’s a consequence. And this bimbos think its all fun and games. How selfish and rude they really are…they deserve to be kicked out of the park!

    • Marko50 says:

Congratulations! The first intelligent (negative) remark on this subject.

  • evennow says:

Heights Life - I agree. And there re those who flip the finger,do disgusting things with their tongues and the guys to stand with the pants unzipped and . . . . YEP it all goes on. Disneyland is making a (should say another) huge public relations mistake but will only wake up when the attorneys come calling.

  • A. L. Flanagan says:

We as a country need to get over this whole insane nudity phobia. When 9/16 of a second of a partially-uncovered breast leads to a Supreme Court case, there’s something very wrong with us.

  • Crusader says:

Decades ago, as a male, I kissed another male once on Splash Mountain when the camera snapped our pic. We were sold the photograph, which is way cool!
