Disney union agrees to mediate as fast starts

February 9th, 2010, 7:22 pm by Sarah Tully

wetprotestledeThe Disney hotel union agreed to meet with a federal mediator shortly before members began a hunger strike Tuesday night to draw support to their side of a two-year contract dispute.

Outside Disney hotels, about 100 union members and backers marched in the rain, held a candlelight vigil under a tent and prayed as they supported 10 people who plan to consume only water for a week. Protesters, many wearing rain ponchos, presented flowers and candles in front of a picture of a Disney hotel worker who had a fatal heart attack on the job.

About an hour before the protest, Disney received a letter from the union, Unite Here Local 11, saying members would go along with mediation. Disney had sent a letter requesting the joint session Jan. 29. Union officials have said they doubt a resolution will be reached.

“Actions like this are not productive,” said Suzi Brown, a Disneyland Resort spokeswoman, about the hunger-strike event. “We think a more productive path to resolve this issue is through mediation.”

Disneyland parks attendance jumps 20 percent

February 9th, 2010, 2:58 pm by Sarah Tully

Sleeping Beauty's Winter CastleAttendance at Disneyland Resort parks jumped 20 percent in winter months compared to the same period the previous year.

The Walt Disney Co. today released its earnings for the first quarter of 2010, which runs from Oct. 4 to Jan. 2. (UPDATE: We just got additional figures from Disney about Disneyland Resort’s attendance.)

Top Disney officials credited a 20-percent attendance hike partly to the big-drawing New Year’s holiday, which fell in the second quarter of the previous year. The week between Christmas and New Years Day is traditionally among the busiest of the year at the Disneyland Resort.

But July to October also had a big jump in attendance with a 15-percent hike.

Overall, U.S. park attendance went up 9 percent in the first quarter.

Without the shift of the New Years dates, Disneyland and Disney’s California Adventure’s attendance in the first quarter would have jumped about 15 percent and Florida parks would have seen a 1-percent drop in attendance, said Jay Rasulo, chief financial officer for the Walt Disney Co., during a conference call with investors.

Fewer visitors, however, stayed at Disneyland Resort’s three hotels: Grand Californian, Paradise Pier and Disneyland hotels. There, occupancy was about 78 percent — 7 percent lower than the prior year, Rasulo said. Disneyland Resort hotel guests also spent less money.

Silly Symphony Swings

Progress can be seen on the upcoming Silly Symphony Swings attraction, as the top was installed last week in Disney’s California Adventure.

Conductor Mickey sits at the top, while decorative panels depict scenes from the 1935 color cartoon, “The Band Concert.” Cows, horses, dogs, pigs and other animals making up the band’s musicians decorate the rest of the ride.

In comparison to the Orange Stinger, which it replaces, Silly Symphony Swings appears significantly smaller sans the orange peel. Read the rest of this entry »

Disney’s Rivers of America dry, even with rains

February 8th, 2010, 2:18 pm by Mark Eades

Disneyland’s Rivers of America is dry, or nearly dry, after being drained of its 9 million gallons of water for a big refurbishment project.

The longtime Frontierland attraction has been surrounded by construction fences since Jan. 4, when the Disneyland Resort began draining the river.

disneydryriverblog1The water was sent to the Orange County Water District for recycling, using the same methods as when the lagoon at Disney’s California Adventure was drained.

Just like in that project, the Disneyland Resort will get that water back when the time to refill the river comes, anticipated to be sometime in May.

The biggest item park workers are tackling during this refurbishment is the replacement of the entire track that guides the Mark Twain Riverboat and Columbia Sailing Ship on their trips around the river.

According to park officials, the only things found this time in the bottom of the dry riverbed were some lost cell phones and hats. It took about a week to drain the river.

The recent rain storms have kept the park pumps working to keep the river dry so that workers and welders can continue their work. But, said park spokesperson Betsy Sanchez, the rains have not delayed progress.

The river is also visible to riders of the Disneyland Railroad. When the word leaked out about the planned refurbishment, there was speculation that there might be major changes to the scenery along the riverfront.

But so far no plans have been disclosed.

The river plays host to several longtime Disneyland attractions including Pirate’s Lair on Tom Sawyer’s Island and the Davy Crockett Explorer Canoes, along with the riverboat and sailing ship.

It is also the backdrop for Fantasmic! A live, night-time entertainment show that park guests watch from in front of New Orleans Square. It includes a giant fire-breathing dragon in its finale.

The last time the river was drained was 2002-2003.
