CHOC Walk fundraiser thrives despite economy

October 18th, 2009, 11:50 am by Joshua Sudock

03.chocwalk.p101909.mgHere’s a dispatch from Register reporter Jessica Terrell and staff photographer Michael Goulding.

—————–

DISNEYLAND - John Mash was diagnosed with leukemia at age 2. Then at 14, he was told by doctors that he had brain cancer and was given five weeks to live.

Today, five years after his bout with brain cancer, Mash, 19, joined 12,000 participants in the 19th annual CHOC Walk at Disneyland to help support the hospital his mother credits for his continued survival.

Despite the bad economy, which some participants said made fundraising for teams difficult, the walkers raised roughly the same amount as last year – $1.5 million as of this morning. [READ THE ENTIRE STORY]

Crafting jack-o’-lanterns for Disneyland

October 13th, 2009, 3:00 am by Joshua Sudock

pumpkinledePumpkin carving is a popular Halloween tradition for many American families. Most are probably unfamiliar with the jack-o’-lantern’s origin.

According to history.com, it all started with an Irish myth about a man nicknamed “Stingy Jack” who made a deal with the devil to pay off a bar tab.

The story gets more ridiculous from there and ends with Stingy Jack dead and condemned to wander the Earth in never-ending darkness.

The devil leaves Stingy Jack’s ghost a lump of burning coal for light. Jack put the coal in a hollowed-out pumpkin to create a lantern … or so the story goes.

Irishmen who thought they had encountered Jack’s ghostly figure began to refer to him as “Jack of the Lantern,” and then simply, “Jack-o’-Lantern.”

Anyhow, there’s no hint of anything so grim afoot at Disneyland’s Big Thunder Ranch, where professional pumpkin carvers have been crafting jack-o’-lanterns with a Disney twist for the last few weeks.

The Disney creations feature your favorite characters: Mickey, Minnie and the like — all smiling… for the most part.

Jennifer Hoppert has carved jack-o’-lanterns at Disneyland for the last four seasons.

pumpkin0002“The kids make it so much fun,” Hoppert says. “They get so into watching me work that sometimes their parents have to coax them away.”

Carvings take between one-and-a-half and six hours depending on the complexity, according to Hoppert. And it’s not uncommon for families to check on the progress of a carving several times over the course of a day.

“I love the Evil Snow White Queen pumpkin,” says Lisa Mayer, of Riverside. “I’ve never seen a pumpkin [carving] with so much detail - the face is just amazing.”

This is all part of Disneyland’s annual Halloween Time celebration, which runs through Nov. 1. (We previously reported the incorrect end date). Pumpkin carvers are working daily through the end of the season.
