Keeping Disneyland’s window displays fresh all year

February 5th, 2010, 1:05 pm by Mark Eades

disneywindowsledeAs the last guest leaves the Disneyland Resort’s theme parks at night, a crew of 10 makes its way out and starts opening up the windows in front of the shops.

The 10 make up the window-decorating crew of the Resort Enhancement team and they’re responsible for keeping the displays in the windows fresh and updated in both theme parks, the hotels and Downtown Disney.

“We want the displays to fit in with the seasons,” said Dawn Keehne, a Resort Enhancement manager.

The team recently worked along Main Street in Disneyland, completely changing out many of the displays from a winter to a spring theme.  With all the windows in the park, it can take a week to change them all.

Though the displays are unique, the tools they use are not.

We use all the same tools as most craft people,” said Mark Apepe, lead for the window-decorating team. “Basic tools from drills, hammers and screwdrivers to scissors and a sewing kit.”

Once the seasonal theme is installed, the crew members will add appropriate holiday overlays such as  Valentine’s Day.

They will also incorporate the needs of a particular store’s merchandising line, and work with Walt Disney Imagineering and the studio’s animation department.

When they’re not working in the parks, the team is back in a warehouse building located off-property in Anaheim, where they design window displays for other seasons and holidays.

Some of the props used in the displays are antiques or purchased from unique vendors. Because of the unique nature of the displays, the team also manufactures many props and items, from models of the Disney characters to a genie’s lamp.

Surprise Nick Jonas concert at Downtown Disney

February 2nd, 2010, 9:37 pm by Mark Eades

Word leaked out around 4 p.m. on the Internet that singer Nick Jonas would be coming to Downtown Disney to sing a few songs.

And, a few hours later, Jonas was singing in a free, surprise concert in the Disneyland Resort.

Please enable Javascript and Flash to view this Brightcove video.

The concert was billed as a “Twitter-tour” to promote his newly released CD/DVD set, “Who I Am.”

Teens and some parents came from Riverside, Los Angeles and other areas, saying they had heard about it from a Twitter post that was making the Internet rounds from celebrity gossip blogger Perez Hilton.

“You wouldn’t think that a 17-year-old would come up with the words to his songs that he does,” said Ashley Miskofski, 24, of Placentia.

Ashley and her 15-year-old sister, Courtney, lined up at 5:15 p.m. to get a front row spot for the short concert. While the Twitter posts suggested he would show up as early as 5:30 p.m., Jonas finally appeared for three songs in front of the Studio Disney 365 store at 7:30 p.m.

By then there were more than 2,000 screaming, mainly teen-age fans standing in front of the store, mostly girls, pressed against the barricades to get a glimpse of their star.

Disney passholders get extended discounts

January 29th, 2010, 7:00 am by Sarah Tully

Disneyland Resort officials this week decided to extend discounts for all annual passholders through May 3.

Discounts were originally offered during the holiday season, but the deals were supposed to end Monday, Feb. 1. But officials decided to allow discounts through the spring, said Michelle Harker of Disneyland Resort merchandise.

Most annual passholders get 10 percent off at select Disneyland Resort stores, while premium passholders receive 20 percent off. The stores are listed at Disneyland.com/ap. MiceChat.com also listed the discounts.

Usually, only premium passholders get 10 percent discounts.

The Shops at Anaheim GardenWalk, a nearby outdoor mall, locations also are offering discounts to annual passholders. Disneyland has an arrangement with GardenWalk for overflow parking, so Disney visitors might end up parking there anyway.
