Anaheim Gardenwalk to host Ugliest Dog Competition

June 24th, 2009, 10:19 am by Adam Townsend, Staff Writer

The Anaheim GardenWalk is going to the dogs.

Literally.

These canines aren’t your regular pooches, however. These ugly mutts will be there for the competition that the GardenWalk is hosting come July 18, and this time it’s not for Best in Show or Best Groomed. It’s for the Ugliest Dog.

Yes, you read that right. The Anaheim Gardenwalk is setting up a competition for the ugliest dog ever to grace Orange County. In addition to the aforementioned category, additional categories include: “Cutest Puppy”, “Dog Who Looks Most Like its Owner,” “Best Costume” and “Best Trick.”

Dog owners who are set on winning can register at the Anaheim GardenWalk’s official site here.

In addition to the competition, the Orange County Humane Society will set up shop at the event where people will be able to adopt their own furry friends.

The winners will receive a bounty of prizes, including a variety of gift cards redeemable at many of Anaheim GardenWalk’s 55 locations.

Let the games begin.

‘People still vacation’ — Disney expects new time shares to sell out fast

March 29th, 2009, 9:45 pm by Adam Townsend, Staff Writer

As hundreds of workers hang drywall, weld girders, pour concrete and install plumbing in the new wing of Disney’s Grand Californian, the sales staff are kicking off selling space in 50 time shares.

The villas at the Grand, to be completed in the fall, will be the 10th location in Disney’s growing “Vacation Club” business.

Mike Brunson, the sales director for Disney Vacation Club on the West Coast, said he expects the timeshares to sell out fast, despite the spiraling economy.

“We’re actually finding we’re doing very, very well,” he said. “In economic times like these, people still vacation. We’re actually growing year over year.”

BLOG ROUNDUP: Food and freebies at the Anaheim GardenWalk

The Southern California Restaurant Writers Awards Banquet recently recognized the Disneyland Resort with awards for 15 of its restaurants.

“A highlight for Resort restaurants was the recognition of Alex Flores and Francisco Origel, sous chefs at the perennially popular Napa Rose in Disney’s Grand Californian Hotel & Spa, as co-winners of the ‘Sous Chef of the Year’ award,” Disney stated in a press release. “Napa Rose was honored further with a Golden Bacchus Wine Award and a Golden Sceptre (Five Star) award…the awards reflect Disneyland Resort’s commitment to guest service, which has been enhanced under the guidance of Master Sommelier Michael Jordan and his wine education program. The Resort has 300 certified sommeliers who assist guests with the pairing of wine and food.”

Other winning restaurants at the Disneyland Resort were Steakhouse 55, Ariel’s Grotto, Blue Bayou, Cafe Orleans, Hook’s Pointe and Wine Cellar, Storyteller’s Cafe, Yamabuki, Goofy’s Kitchen, Ralph Brennan’s Jazz Kitchen, Tortilla Jo’s and the PCH Grill.

The Orlando Sentinel reports that guests at Disney’s theme parks are opting to feed their kids healthier foods while eating in the parks. In recent years, Disney has updated the menus at theme park restaurants to offer healthy choices, such as fruit instead of French fries.

“According to company data, 65 percent of guests at Walt Disney World and Disneyland ordered the healthier side dish and 68 percent ordered the healthier drink last year during Disney’s fiscal fourth quarter, which runs July through September,” the article says.  To read the rest of the story, click here.

S.O.A.R., a Disney-backed politcal coalition originally organized to fight efforts to build housing in the resort area, will be hosting an event at the Anaheim GardenWalk on Thursday, June 19 from 5:30-8 p.m.  The event includes free samples from California Pizza Kitchen, McCormick and Schmick’s and Bar Louie and free admission to the Cinemafusion theatre/IMAX.  Look for more information here.

Lush Fresh Handmade Cosmetics will be celebrating their grand opening at the GardenWalk on Saturday, March 21from 12-4 p.m. with free facials, demos and prizes.

Disneyland-area mall lures few customers

February 19th, 2009, 8:12 am by Sarah Tully

One family ate at a single table in an otherwise empty food court on a recent weekday afternoon at the Anaheim GardenWalk mall. Some stores had made no sales by 2 p.m. And only a few browsers sauntered by clothing boutiques and empty storefronts.

But on the Saturday night of Valentine’s Day, one large restaurant was booked by 8 p.m. Others had more than two hour waits. The bowling alley’s wait was almost as long. And patrons bustled through the main mall corridor in the chilly air.

Eight months after its grand opening, the Anaheim GardenWalk is finding mixed success in luring customers to the long-awaited outdoor mall and entertainment destination near Disneyland.

Nightspots, especially major chain restaurants and a nightclub at opposite ends, fill up regularly on weekends.

But the businesses in between – clothing stores, fast-food joints, sweets shops – are struggling to bring in patrons, particularly on weekdays. Just 70 percent of about 80 spaces are occupied.

For more than two decades, JC Fandango brought a touch of Miami nightlife to Orange County.

And it did so from deep inside a seedy shopping center in Anaheim.

There was nothing quite so shocking as to walk through the front doors of the nightclub on a first visit and be transported instantly to another world. The palm trees may have been fake, but the vibe was real. In its time, JC Fandango was the hottest Latin nightclub in the state.

Created by the late Jose Castellanos, the nightspot is now being run by his son Hector, who has taken the family business into the next phase.

Hector’s first move was to move the club uptown from that depressing shopping center to a Garden Grove location on the edge of the revitalized Anaheim Resort area.
